Diffuse-a-riffic!

We just finished up a rather spiffy lab in which we discovered exactly why cells can't get very big. We used blocks of agar with phenolphthalein (a pH indicator) in them to see how far a liquid (NaOH solution) could diffuse in 10 minutes. Turns out that if you're a sizable cell, it's not far enough. Check out the pictures, though!

Mr. Syracuse,
Thank you for including History on your blog. The article on the Lusitania confirms what I have been teaching for years. Most historians know that the Lusitania was carrying small arms ammunition. The point that I believe needs to be echoed loudly is that the Cunard Line allowed this cargo on board, yet did not feel it essential to inform the passengers of this fact. This ship was travelling through a war zone during a critical juncture of that war. To me, it is another example of the immorality that some business people who place profit above human dignity have demonstrated throughout history... (Mr. Filzen)
